Lake Houston Wilderness Park is a vast and scenic natural preserve covering over 4,700 acres in northeast Houston. It is the only park in the Houston Parks and Recreation Department system that allows overnight camping. The park offers over 20 miles of trails for hiking, biking, and horseback riding, meandering through dense forests of pine and hardwoods. Wildlife such as deer, armadillos, raccoons, and numerous bird species are common throughout the park. Located near the San Jacinto River and Lake Houston, it also offers canoeing and fishing opportunities. Cabins and group campsites make it ideal for weekend getaways close to the city. The park serves as a model for preserving native ecosystems and provides environmental education through nature programs and ranger-led tours.
